A proposal regarding the aerodynamic regulations for 2009 has been made by the 'overtaking commision', which comprises of Rory Byrne, Pat Symonds and Paddy Lowe. In a year time they've been trying to find out (with the help of the Fondmetal windtunnel as well as McLaren's simulator) which aerodynamic configuration is most suited for overtaking. The technical directors of the 11 teams got to see the proposal in Brasil.
Voices around the FIA say that the proposal will probably be given its blessing by the World Council.
This is what it's all about: The frontwing will be 40 cm wider (from 140 to 180 cm). The frontwing is to be a standard part of the car on all cars, this to prevent the designers from changing the wing into all sorts of round shapes, which could react critical to the air coming from the car in front (and thus make overtaking more difficult). The distance from the frontwing to the surface will shrink from 15 to 7.5 cm. The flaps on the frontwing are allowed to be changed twice each lap (max. 6 degrees) from inside the cockpit. This should also make the car less sensitive with regards to the dirty air that the car in front is producing.
The rearwing will be 75 instead of 100 cm wide, and 95 instead of 80 cm high. The diffusor is allowed to arise from the height of 175 whereas it is now 125 mm.
Deflectors, winglets, flip ups and chimney's will be banned in the future, which will reduce the overall downforce levels by a half compared to what it was in 2006. But slicks, and thus more mechanical grip, will come back.
Windtunnel tests, in which two cars were lined up behind each other, have shown that with the proposed regulations, the car that is behind (by half a car length) loses only 25 % of its downforce, compared to the 46 % it is loosing now and that the balance of the car only shifts backwards by 1 instead of the current 4 %. McLaren has programmed the data in their driving simulator. De la Rosa and Paffet have been experimenting with it for three days and they're enthusiatic about the results. In the virtual world at least, it was clearly easier to follow a car that is in front.
